Duet for Clarinet and Piano (2015)

Programme Notes:

I chose the title ‘Duet for Clarinet and Pian‘ to express the dual importance of both clarinet and piano, and the almost constant interplay between parts. The title alludes to no extra-musical meanings and I hope that the music primarily speaks for itself.

My aim for this duet was light-hearted, energetically fusing percussive effects, heavy chromaticism, angular contortions of rhythms and pulse, and not only hinting upon octatonicism and jazz through harmony but also playing with a sense of space in the slower section to incorporate almost literal ghostly resonances of traditional jazz within a context of a quasi-contemporary recitative.

While special care must be given to the extremely specific rhythms and articulation markings especially, the occasionally semi-graphic notation should be enjoyed by the pianist as an opportunity to play with raucous confident freedom.

Road Work

An audio-visual electroacoustic realisation of the imagined music of the road.

The concept is based on childhood car journeys, enjoying the semi-regular pulse of things like road markings, interior noise and irregular objects passing by, with the rise and fall of barriers, the constant interplay of moving traffic, of atmosphere shifts with tunnels and weather, and impact moments of signs, people and bridges.

In this piece, proximities, sizes, velocities, shapes, directions, atmospheres and types of object or real-worlds noises have been subjectively but systematically converted into sounds to create an experience of music and synesthesia.

CINEMATIC COMPOSITIONS

This piece explores portamento, unmeasured undulating tremolandi, and a wide range of instruments including wooden flutes, piano, Western and Eastern strings, voices, brass, percussion, and synthesisers. I tried to evoke a slightly unfamiliar but beautiful and celestial sound world. Some moments are floating and immersive where listeners can relax and notice small details. Other moments have more of a feeling of discovery and momentum.

A fun play-along Christmas present for my godson with an easy melody made from the letters of his name!

I was watching a big sci-fi/action film one afternoon and thought I'd see if I could compose and record something just that evening with no budget and almost no time. So I started from scratch and here's what I made as a timed challenge!

Trying some ideas for big sci-fi soundtrack music.

A little bit retro – A little bit epic orchestral.

Created in 2012 (when I was very young) just for fun.
